This Morning (Talavai) Katsina Doll by Curtis Naseyowma is a striking testament to masterful artistry and precision. Hand-carved from cottonwood root and finished with oil paints and stains, it showcases remarkable depth and texture. What sets this katsina apart are the intricate details-subtle elements like the elegantly draped sash and the fox tail at the back add movement and character, making it a truly captivating piece.
Signed Curtis D. Naseyowma and is an enduring legacy of Hopi tradition.
The Talavai is among the more striking katsinas, distinguished by the impressive fan of eagle feathers adorning its mask and the symbolic bell and spruce tree held in its hands. Traditionally, this katsina appeared in pairs on rooftops at dawn, singing to awaken the village. During the day, they would lead and prompt other katsinas in their songs and dances. Though this role is no longer performed in Hopi villages, the Talavai Katsina continues to play an important part in the Powamu Ceremony, often seen standing to the side of the main procession.
