Miniature Hopi Katsina Doll by Ronald Honyouti

This miniature Katsina doll, masterfully carved by Ronald Honyouti, is identified by multiple names: Sivu-i-quil Taka (Hopi), "Hand Katsina," or "Pot Carrier." It is a remarkable representation of Hopi tradition, meticulously detailed from the intricacies of the kilt, sash, and moccasins to the rocky ledge on which it stands.

The figure holds a staff in its left hand and a shaker in its right, with a stepped design encircling the base. On its back rests a pot strung from its forehead, a symbolic element tied to its alternate name, "Pot Carrier." The painted hand on its face connects it to its other common name, "Hand Katsina."

According to Barton Wright, this Katsina is known by various names-such as Matya, Malatsmo, Malachpeta, and Matyso-each reflecting a different ceremonial function, though the figure's appearance remains consistent. This beautifully carved miniature is a tribute to both Ronald Honyouti's exceptional craftsmanship and the rich cultural heritage of the Hopi people.
