The Hototo, or Badger Katsina, is a revered figure in Hopi tradition, symbolizing strength and medicine. This Katsina appears in Bean and Mixed Katsina Dances, as well as the Powamuya and Niman ceremonies, playing an important role in Hopi spiritual life.
Carved from cottonwood root and stained with oil pigments, this Katsina doll by Bryce Quamahongnewa is a masterful example of Hopi craftsmanship. The face is adorned with two bear claw markings, and around its neck, a traditional pine scruff and a multistrand Pueblo necklace add striking detail. In its hands, yucca leaves — often used as whips in ceremonies — further enhance its symbolic presence. The precision and artistry in this carving are remarkable, bringing movement and grace to the rigid medium of cottonwood.
Bryce Quamahongnewa is known for his exceptional Hopi Pueblo Katsina dolls, following the classic carving styles of the 1980s. His ability to infuse fluidity, contour, and character into each piece is a testament to his mastery. This Katsina, signed on the base, stands as a beautiful representation of both tradition and artistic excellence.
