This stunning one-piece cottonwood root carving depicts an Eagle Katsina in full dance regalia. The figure is dynamically posed, with one arm raised and the other lowered, capturing the energy of the ceremonial dance. The turquoise necklace, swinging away from the chest, further emphasizes the Katsina's movement. Adorned with a traditional white kilt, red woven belt, and colorful moccasins, the figure is complete with the iconic Eagle Katsina mask and feathered wings.
Marlin Pinto, a self-taught artist, honed his skills by observing his uncle, renowned Hopi painter Raymond Naha. Using only a pocketknife, Pinto meticulously carved each detail of his one-piece katsinas. This meticulous approach, devoid of power tools, allowed him to achieve a natural and organic aesthetic. Each carving, including this exquisite Eagle Katsina, required approximately a month to complete.
Born in Zuni Pueblo, Pinto hailed from a lineage of talented Hopi artists. His mother, Shirley Ben, and grandmother, Daisy Hooee Nampeyo, were accomplished potters. His great-grandmother, Annie Healing Nampeyo, and great-great-grandmother, Nampeyo of Hano, are legendary figures in the world of Hopi pottery. Pinto's artistic journey began at the tender age of eleven, and he quickly gained recognition for his miniature katsina dolls. Later, he turned his attention to larger, one-piece carvings, establishing himself as an unparalleled master of this challenging art form.
