Malcolm Fred Eagle Kachina Doll, Kwahu Katsina

This Hopi Eagle (Kwahu) katsina doll, crafted by Malcolm Fred (b. 1960) from the Third Mesa village of Bacavi in Arizona, is a masterpiece of hand-carved cottonwood root adorned with oil paints. The carving captures a breathtaking elegance, with the figure perched delicately on one foot as if balanced on a cliffside or mountain peak. Each feather on the headdress and wings is meticulously carved, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. Painted in soft, muted tones, the doll reflects an incredible level of attention to detail and artistry.

The Eagle katsina appears in several Hopi spring ceremonies, including the Kiva and Repeat dances. Eagles hold a sacred role within the Hopi spiritual world, regarded as honored guests and family members. They receive gifts and care similar to that given to Hopi children, culminating in a ritual of reverence in which their feathers are collected for use in sacred practices.

This katsina, created in 2008, is signed on the bottom as KM Fred and remains in superb, original condition.
