Artist signature of an Unidentified Native American Carver

This masterfully carved and highly expressive White Ogre Katsina doll is an exceptional example of Hopi artistry and storytelling. Though the artist's signature appears as an emblem we have not yet identified, the quality of the work speaks volumes.

Carved entirely from wood, the figure showcases the fearsome White Ogre, or Wiharu Katsina, known in Hopi tradition for instilling discipline in children and encouraging them to follow Hopi ways. His exaggerated mouth is meant to warn that misbehavior could lead to dire consequences — like being eaten by the ogre himself.

The gesture and posture of the carving are particularly striking, with the entire piece balanced dramatically on one foot. He holds a sharp cleaver in one hand and a bow in the other, reinforcing his role as a figure of authority and intimidation.

Every detail is executed with remarkable craftsmanship — from the upright feathers on his head to the animal skin draped over his shoulders. A quiver of arrows rests against his back, while his legs are painted to suggest cotton leggings, and his feet are finished with traditional pueblo moccasins. This is not just a carving — it's a powerful, expressive sculpture that captures the essence and presence of the White Ogre Katsina in a rare and captivating way.
