Carlos Dunlap, Jr.: A Legacy in Pottery
Carlos Dunlap, Jr., a renowned artist from the San Ildefonso Pueblo, embarked on his journey in pottery at a tender age. His exceptional skills in pottery and painting earned him recognition as a prodigy, destined to follow in the illustrious footsteps of the matriarch, Maria Martinez.
Carlos was celebrated for his classic polychrome plates, a testament to his mastery of traditional designs. His creativity shone through in his large pieces, where he skillfully incorporated these designs. In addition, he pioneered the creation of Brown-on-brown ware, a unique complement to Maria's exquisite Black on black ware.
Born in 1958, Carlos Dunlap, Jr., also known as Carlos Sunrise, was the son of Carmelita Dunlap, the niece of Maria Martinez. His life, however, was tragically cut short in 1981 due to a car accident. Despite his untimely demise, Carlos's legacy continues to live on in his timeless pottery creations.
