Carlos Sunrise Dunlap’s Master Work: The Polychrome Jar

This polychrome jar, a testament to the artistic prowess of the young San Ildefonso Pueblo artist Carlos Sunrise Dunlap, showcases his mastery of pottery techniques. Despite his short life of 23 years, with less than a decade spent actively creating pottery, Carlos's work exhibits a depth of understanding and skill that is clearly evident in this jar.

The jar's form adheres to the traditional Tewa shape, characterized by a rounded lower body and a tall, curving neck. The entire surface was meticulously covered in a Cochiti rag-wiped cream slip, providing a canvas for the artist's designs. Carlos strategically limited the use of red pigment to the upper neck area, creating a striking contrast. Encircling the neck are four rectangular boxes, two housing upside-down red triangles and the other two containing a three-prong resting triangle. The rest of the vessel's designs were executed in black pigment, adding to the visual intrigue.

The mid-body bulge of the jar features a series of black-outlined ovoids that rotate around the jar, creating a sense of movement. Below this, a series of hooked elements culminate in a spiral with two triangular attachments, adding another layer of complexity to the design.

Carlos Sunrise Dunlap (1958-1981) left his mark on the jar in two places: inscribed into the lower edge of the base and on the underside of the jar, accompanied by what appears to be the year 1978. This personal touch not only identifies the creator but also adds a layer of authenticity and personal connection to the piece.
