This Hopi Sio Hemis Katsina Doll is a striking representation of one of the most renowned and visually captivating Katsinas from the Hopituh Shi-nu-mu (Hopi Pueblo). Known for its elaborate headdress, or tableta, this Katsina showcases the artistry and symbolism central to Hopi culture. The Hopi Sio Hemis Katsinas are adorned with traditional Hopi attire, including a kilt and an embroidered sash around the waist.
The Hopi Sio Hemis, an adaptation of the Zuni Pueblo Hemis Katsina introduced to Hopi in the late 1800s, appears during the Niman Ceremony in mid-July.
The Niman Ceremony, marking the conclusion of the Katsina season, occurs shortly after the summer solstice when the sun reaches its northernmost point. This "going-home" ceremony unfolds over several days, culminating in the plaza dance and gift presentations from the Katsinas. The Hopi Sio Hemis Katsinas are often chosen for this event due to their spectacular appearance and the popularity of their accompanying songs.
This Katsina doll is unsigned, further emphasizing its traditional significance.
