This Hopi Hakto katsina doll, dating back to approximately 1941, is a rare and historically significant piece of Hopi artistry. Originally from Zuni Pueblo, where he is known as Yamuhakto, Hakto is a significant figure in both Pueblo cultures. At Hopi, he appears alongside the Sio Salako, praying for the trees that provide wood for homes and warmth.

Purchased from Plume's Trading Post in New York City in 1951, this doll comes with a detailed provenance. While the base may have been added later, the craftsmanship and style suggest the work of a skilled Hopi carver. The signature of the maker might be found on the bottom of the feet, though it's currently obscured by the base.

The mask, a helmet-shaped piece with red ear tabs and turquoise-colored earring strings, is adorned with a cottonwood stick, a traditional element of the Hakto costume. The black and white curved ruff around the neck adds visual interest, while the regular Katsina body paint, white kilt, Hopi sash, silver concho belt, and red and blue moccasins complete the ensemble. Possibly, the doll once held twigs to represent deer antlers. This historic Hakto katsina doll is a captivating piece of Hopi cultural heritage.
