Artist signature and hallmark of Rose Chino Garcia, Acoma Pueblo PotterRose Chino Garcia, a renowned potter from the Acoma Pueblo, is known for her distinctive black-on-white pottery designs. One of her trademark designs is the "fine-line" or "line" design, which features intricate and delicate geometric patterns, often with fine parallel lines that create a mesmerizing optical effect. This style is highly characteristic of Acoma pottery and showcases the precision and artistry of Rose Chino's work.

This particular jar features 22 heartline deer. The heartline deer is a traditional Native American motif, symbolizing the life force or spirit of the animal. The heartline typically starts at the mouth and runs to the heart, representing the vital breath and the essence of life within the deer. This design not only highlights Rose Chino's skill but also embodies cultural and spiritual significance. The bottom of the jar is signed "Rose Chino Acoma, New Mexico"

Rose Chino Garcia and her sisters, Carrie Chino Charlie, Vera Chino Ely and Grace Chino, are daughters of Marie Z. Chino and all of them are exceptional potters, as was their mother. Garcia's pottery is in the collections of the Peabody Museum at Harvard University, Heard Museum in Phoenix, Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, and numerous private collections. She has won awards at Santa Fe Indian Market since 1975-one award was for "most creative design."

Garcia is an exceptional potter, achieving beautifully thin-walled vessels and well-balanced designs. The design on this canteen is the purest fine-line design any artist could achieve. Each line, placed
free hand, is parallel to the next with separations of equal space between all of them. The star burst at the center of the body is a perfect design to capture one's attention. The added heartline deer elements are one of her favorite designs.
