Grace Medicine Flower and Camilio Tafoya, Santa Clara Pueblo Potters

Artists' signatures of Grace Medicine Flower and Camilio Tafoya, Santa Clara Pueblo PottersThis exceptional sienna and black seed jar is a collaborative piece by renowned Santa Clara Pueblo artists Grace Medicine Flower and her father, Camilio Tafoya. The exterior of the jar has been skillfully stone-polished, resulting in a smooth, consistent sheen that enhances the richness of its contrasting tones. The artists employed a secondary heat source to create three sienna-toned areas, beautifully integrated into the black background. From these sienna sections, intricate Navajo Yei figures emerge, masterfully executed in the sgraffito technique.

The jar is signed on the bottom, "Grace Medicine Flower (with insignia of her distinctive flower) and Camilio Tafoya," with an additional small flower insignia delicately placed on the side. This piece embodies the artistic synergy between father and daughter, both of whom were members of the esteemed Tafoya family of Santa Clara Pueblo.

Grace Medicine Flower (b. 1938) began collaborating with her father, Camilio Tafoya (1902-1995), at a young age, learning the traditions of Santa Clara pottery. While both artists initially worked in traditional carved ware, each evolved a distinct style — Camilio known for his large-scale works, and Grace for her pioneering mastery of sgraffito carving. Her meticulous approach and delicate balance of design elevated the technique to new heights.

With its harmonious interplay of sienna and black, exquisite sgraffito detailing, and the unmistakable artistry of two of Santa Clara's most revered potters, this seed jar stands as a testament to the collaborative innovation and enduring legacy of the Tafoya family.
