This exceptional Cochiti Pueblo ceramic font by potter Louis Naranjo is a beautifully crafted wall-mounted vessel, traditionally used to hold cornmeal. Influenced by Spanish colonial religious practices, Cochiti fonts reflect a unique blend of Catholic and Indigenous artistic traditions.
This piece features a striking six-point buck deer head, adorned with classic Cochiti Pueblo motifs. Bold geometric patterns, including a stepped design, are painted in black on a red clay base over a white slip background. A subtle red outline enhances the deer's expressive eyes and inner ears, adding depth and character to the piece.
Designed for display, the font comes with a leather strap for easy hanging, making it a remarkable fusion of functionality, cultural heritage, and artistic mastery.
