This original painting was created by Oklahoma artist Chester Wills. It is a quaint image that will appeal to those with a taste for scenes of daily life. Wills’ subject here is a Native person tending to the horno oven outside of their home. The person’s bright orange shirt is situated just to the right of the painting’s center. A few small spots of pink represent flowers within a nearby group of plants. Save for these two subtle spots of bright color, the painting uses the tried-and-true tones we see often in Southwestern landscapes.
Behind the horno oven, we see an adobe house and a smattering of plants. Further into the distance, a group of trees reaches just above the top of the house. Even further back is a purple mountain range rising into a bright white formation of billowing clouds. This is a sweet, well-crafted painting that reminds us of the works of Taos artists Albert Lujan, Albert Looking Elk and Juan Mirabal.
The painting is signed Chester Wills in the lower left. It is framed in a wide gold frame.
Chester Wills (1909 - 1990) was an artist from Oklahoma. Very little information about the artist is available, but he seems to have preferred painting landscapes, portraits of Native people, and scenes of Native people performing their household duties.
