Robert Tenorio Sketch

Pottery from the 1930s era of Kewa Pueblo often is thought of as rather insignificant tourist wares but the potters there also made some very traditional larger jars that are magnificent. This jar, I believe, is such a jar. It certainly is larger in scale than those made for railway-travelling tourists and the construction is excellent.

The cream slip was meticulously polished prior to the application of the black and brick red designs. Quite often, this slip is rag-wiped and left in a matte finish, but this potter took time to polish it to a beautiful sheen. The application of the design was not the most carefully undertaken and could possibly have been painted by a second party to the one who made the jar.

It is this combination of super size, polished slip, and matte design that makes this jar such a commanding figure. One cannot overlook the boldness of the floral elements. It is charming and impressive and has been in the same family since 1932.

Condition: There was a crack extending vertically from the rim down to the shoulder and that has been professionally restored by a conservator. No other conservation was

Provenance: Given to Jessie Kolius as a housewarming gift in the summer of 1932 for a cabin in Weed, NM. She passed it on to her son Bill Kolius in 1974 who, in turn, passed it on to Tom Kolius in 1996, the present owner.
