When the bowl developed a lateral crack from the rim into the bowl, it was reinforced with wire on the exterior for added strength. This is a typical native repair to make it possible for continued use of the bowl. Such native repairs have been accepted by collectors as very desirable.

Generally, one considers large bowls that measure 18 or more inches in diameter to be classified as dough bowls.  Bowls of lesser scale are often referred to as serving bowls, however, these smaller bowls, in the 14-inch diameter range, also may be considered dough bowls when they are being used as such.

This bowl has sufficient depth and diameter to make bread for an average-sized family.  The out-turned rim is another feature that is associated with dough bowls.  Such a rim allows more room to accommodate a person’s arms when kneading bread dough.  A polished interior is another characteristic of dough bowls.

This Kewa Pueblo Large Dough Bowl has all the features of a dough bowl in relation to size, rim and polish.  The exterior design is one sometimes referred to as a “bow tie” design, although that certainly was not the intent of the potter.  When the bowl developed a lateral crack from the rim into the bowl, it was reinforced with wire on the exterior for added strength.  This is a typical native repair to make it possible for continued use of the bowl.  Such native repairs have been accepted by collectors as very desirable.

Condition:  This is a truly classic bowl from the early 20th century.  It appears to be in very good condition, however, there is evidence of repair on the exterior bottom.  It appears that the whole exterior red bottom has been repaired and painted over.  There is no indication of any repair on the interior.  There is one rim chip.  Overall, it is a beautiful bowl.

Provenance:  from the extensive collection of a Santa Fe resident who has unfortunately moved to another city and found it necessary to greatly reduce her collection.

A polished interior is another criteria of dough bowls.
