The Yoche Apache Warrior Katsina, also known as Yotsi, is traditionally seen as one of the comic or caricature katsinam, often appearing alongside clowns and acting out exaggerated Apache warrior behavior. However, in this remarkable carving by Ray Chee, the figure is transformed into a dignified and heroic representation of an Apache warrior. Standing nearly 16 inches tall, this katsina is an impressive work of artistry that honors the strength and spirit of the Apache people.
Carved from traditional cottonwood root, the figure embodies the heraldry, bravery, and honor of a warrior. The intricate details include a striking headdress with feathers, bold face paint, weapons in hand, and carefully rendered clothing that signifies his warrior status. The dynamic posture and expression convey a sense of movement and purpose, a testament to Chee's mastery in creating lifelike sculptures.
The Yoche Apache Warrior Katsina acknowledges the historical interactions between the Hopi and Apache peoples. It is a powerful symbol of both past conflicts and intertribal relationships. The katsina is often seen in Hopi dances, where it serves as a reminder of these connections.
Signed on the bottom, Yoche Apache Warrior Kachina, Ray Chee, this piece is a fine example of Chee's artistic excellence. Born in 1961, Ray Chee comes from both Navajo and Hopi heritage. He carves using traditional Hopi knife-carved cottonwood root, creating both Hopi Katsinam and Navajo-inspired sculptures. Alongside his brother Duwayne and nephew Duwayne Jr., he has increasingly focused on Native cultural history in his work, producing pieces of great artistic and cultural significance.
Originally a welder by trade, Raymond Chee turned to carving professionally following an accident. As a self-taught artist, his wooden sculptures are recognized for their well-proportioned anatomy, dynamic movement, and meticulous detail. His work spans a broad range of Native American figures and mythology, showcasing his deep respect for tradition and storytelling. His carvings are highly regarded and have been featured in esteemed collections, including the Schingoethe Center for Native American Cultures Museum at Aurora University in Illinois. His talent continues to earn recognition, most notably with a Best of Class award in the Sculpture division at the 2021 Santa Fe Indian Market.
