“Reservation Dusk #1” is an original acrylic painting by Hopi-Tewa artist Dan Namingha. The component parts of this image—the desert, a distant mesa, and the sky above—have been painted countless times by countless artists who draw inspiration from the beauty of the Southwest. Namingha’s depiction more than earns its place in a crowded field; with its inviting atmosphere and outstanding color scheme, “Reservation Dusk #1” stands out as a particularly strong version of a classic image.
Namingha’s image is split horizontally into thirds, with dark earth occupying the lower third and electrifying sky occupying the upper two. The foreground’s smattering of plant life is phenomenal, and the area between it and the mesa glows despite being made of cool greens and blues. The thin black mesa is a strong, stylish touch. Above and beyond the mesa is a sky that appears to be on fire. It begins with a dazzling orange, before becoming darker and more complex with the additions of red and black in its upper region. “Reservation Dusk #1” is an outstanding offering from Dan Namingha. It’s a striking, impactful image that works wonders within a fairly small space.
The painting is signed Namingha in the lower left. The following text is painted on verso: “‘Reservation Dusk #1’, 2002, Dan Namingha.” The canvas is wrapped around a wood frame and mounted within a black frame.
