Best known for his groundbreaking jewelry, Charles Loloma was also a highly skilled ceramic artist, creating exceptional stoneware pieces. His name in the Hopi language means "beauty," a fitting description for his innovative approach to art and design. Before turning to jewelry in 1955, Loloma worked alongside his wife, Otellie, crafting exquisite stoneware pottery that pushed the boundaries of traditional Pueblo methods.
This stoneware bowl is a testament to his mastery of form and technique. Unlike traditional Pueblo pottery, which is typically hand-coiled, this piece was thrown on a wheel, showcasing Loloma's innovative spirit and willingness to embrace new methods. The interior is glazed in a soft grey, while the exterior features a deeper grey-green glaze that enhances its sculptural presence. A continuous zig-zag design is flawlessly repeated around the circumference, creating a dynamic yet elegant rhythm that speaks to Loloma's refined aesthetic.
Signed on the bottom and dated ‘53, this exceptional work stands as an example of Charles Loloma's artistic vision, reflecting his lifelong dedication to pushing artistic boundaries while honoring his Hopi heritage.
