This exceptional Hopi jar with a lid and handles is a remarkable work by renowned Hopi-Tewa artist Helen Naha, also known as Feather Woman. The jar features a tight-fitting lid and is adorned with dark brown and sienna Hopi eagle designs on a light grey slip. The artist's masterful use of stippling in the feathers creates a rich dark brown texture without having to introduce an additional color to the design, showcasing her refined technique.
Helen Naha (1922-1993) Feather Woman was celebrated for her striking black-on-white pottery early in her career and later became known for her intricate polychrome designs. She signed her pieces with her iconic feather hallmark. A member of the Spider Clan, she was the sister-in-law of Joy Navasie (Frog Woman) and the mother of Burel, Rainy, and Sylvia Naha, who carried on her pottery legacy. The Naha and Navasie families lived on a large ranch east of Keam's Canyon on the Hopi Reservation, where they continued the rich tradition of Hopi pottery.
Condition: very good condition with a few very minor abrasions to the paint surface
Provenance: This Feather Woman Jar with Lid is from a private collection.
