Jeweler Once Known

This mid-20th century highly decorated sterling silver ketoh by a Jeweler Once Known — probably a Diné artist of the Navajo Nation. It is a striking example of the evolution of traditional archery wrist guards into finely crafted jewelry. Originally, ketohs (pronounced Kay-Toe) were simple leather cuffs worn on the left wrist to protect against the snap of a bowstring. Over time, they became highly decorative, blending function with artistry.

This particular ketoh features a hand-formed and curved silver panel, designed to fit comfortably around the wrist. The surface is richly adorned with intricate stamping and repoussé work, showcasing the silversmith's skill. Adding to its beauty, turquoise and coral cabochons are set in finely crafted bezels, creating a striking contrast against the polished silver. The entire silver ensemble is mounted on a leather cuff with ties, ensuring both a secure and adjustable fit.

Condition: very good condition
