"Maiden Singers" is a stone lithograph by Hopi artist Dan Namingha. It was completed in 1979 at Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque. It was completed in an edition of 125, of which this is number 114. Seven colors were used on buff Arches paper; those who are familiar with the mechanics of the medium know that working with so many colors requires incredible skill, experience, and confidence.
Namingha's maidens face the viewer directly. Their masks and jewelry are distinctive, and their hair and feather headpieces match. Their robed bodies combine into a single larger form, which occupies much of the image. Within this form, a wonderful abstract composition appears, making fine use of Namingha's expansive but tasteful color palette. A full moon and distant sliver of a desert mesa appear far in the background.
The print is mounted with its edges exposed over a maroon backing, within an olive green matte. It is framed under acrylic, in a wood frame. It is numbered 114/125, titled and signed in pencil along the lower edge. Tamarind Institute's chop mark and an additional chop mark—the printer's or Namingha's—appear in lower right.
