Frank Hamilton Cushing and James Stevenson made collections at Cochiti Pueblo in 1879 and 1880 and the majority of pottery items acquired by them were effigy vessels and figurines, with almost no ollas or bowls being included.  Their conclusions, and ours as well, were that potters only made vessels for their own use with effigies and figurines being made for sale to tourists and merchants.

During the 1910 to 1930 period, pottery production increased but was still made by only a few women.  This olla, with its beautifully designed decoration, was probably made in this early 20th century period, quite possibly by Ignacita Suina Arquero.  This attribution is being made based on known examples of her work that are of the quality of the painting on this jar.

Condition:  original excellent condition

Provenance:  from a resident of Santa Fe
