The shape of this jar is that of a storage jar, round and bulbous, but it is smaller in size. The artist, Juanita Cordero Arquero, is stated to have been actively making pottery only from the 1960s to the 1980s, however, she is the one who taught Helen Cordero and Felicita Eustace the techniques of pottery making. Juanita was a sister-in-law of Helen Cordero.
This jar is signed with the artist’s name and the date August 14, 1975. It was beautifully designed and painted with birds, clouds, rain and lightning. These are typical design elements of Cochiti Pueblo. The base is concave and covered in stone-polished red slip. The rim is black and has a ceremonial line break.
Condition: this Cochiti Pueblo Pictorial Pottery Jar is in excellent condition.
Provenance: from the collection of a Santa Fe resident who purchased it years ago from the Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe
