Max Early is one of the best potters at Laguna Pueblo today. He generally makes large ollas that are exquisite. This is the first time he has made a nacimiento for us.
The set consists of eleven pieces. There are the Holy Family, three Kings, a turkey, two bears, deer, and fawn. Max said he included a turkey and bears because those are his clans. The three Kings carry an olla, a drum and a bowl. The bowl is filled with corn kernels. Baby Jesus is wrapped in leather and tied to a cradleboard.
Early has his work in the permanent collections of The Cincinnati Art Museum, San Diego Museum of Man, Museum of Indian Art & Culture, and the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center.
