Southwest Indian Pottery: Nacimientos

+Add category to My Preferences

Nacimiento is the Spanish word for a nativity scene or créche. According to recorded information, the first Indian-made nacimientos appeared in the late 1950s. The artisans bring their own unique perspective to the traditional nativity scene - the figures are often dressed in traditional Pueblo clothing and bring gifts such as corn, blankets, bread, chile, and sheep instead of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Many artists also depict the “Flight to Egypt” story, with Joseph leading a donkey carrying Mary with baby Jesus in her arms.

You don't have to wait until the holidays to give someone a gift like this.
Although these figurines have traditionally been recognized as a holiday decoration, they can be enjoyed year-round.
