Gary is the son of Paul and Dorothy Gutierrez and they were his mentors. Paul & Dorothy have made nacimientos since 1971. They were one of the featured artists in the book Nacimientos that was published in 1979. Gary has been making the sets only a few years, but he has mastered the techniques of forming the figurines and stone polishing them.
In this set, Mary is kneeling, Joseph is standing and the Baby Jesus is in a cradleboard. The three kings carry pottery as gifts. A shepherd kneels nearby and a black bear is standing nearby.
This set won a First Prize (Blue Ribbon) at the 1997 Santa Fe Indian Market. The ribbon accompanies the set.
