Christina Naranjo (1891-1980) was the mother of Mary Cain (1915-2010) and was Mary’s mentor as was Mary’s grandmother, Sara Fina Tafoya. This family produced several generations of truly outstanding potters. The younger generation is still very productive and very famous.
I am sure this dual-signed bowl is not the only one in existence but it must be a relatively rare one as I do not recall ever having one signed by both mother and daughter. The carved design is that of the Avanyu (water serpent) and it wraps around the circumference of the bowl. Simple explanation of how the “black” is achieved from red clay: after carving, the work is slipped in iron-bearing slip, intricately stone-polished on all exterior surfaces, excluding the tiny spaces between the carved areas. The pieces are then fired in a smothered, reduction atmosphere to achieve the superb black finish. The bowl is in very good condition with no cracks, chips or significant abrasions at all.
