Artist signature of Lowell Talashoma, Sr. (1950-2003) Hopi PuebloThis extraordinary carving by Lowell Talashoma, Sr. portrays the rare and deeply symbolic pairing of the Blind Mudhead (Koyemsi) and Disabled Tuhavi Katsinas, figures rooted in Hopi legend. Carved from a single piece of cottonwood, the craftsmanship reflects the artist's skill and reverence for Hopi tradition.

The Hopis tell the story of Tuhavi, the disabled Kachina, and Koyemsi, the Blind Mudhead. Long ago, when the tribe was forced to move due to hardship, a disabled man and a blind man were left behind, seemingly doomed. But instead of giving up, the blind man carried the disabled man, who guided him and hunted for food.

One night, as they roasted a rabbit, the fearsome Ogre Kachina appeared. Just when they thought all hope was lost, the Ogre fired an arrow into their fire. Ashes flew into the blind man's eyes, restoring his sight, and sparks landed on the disabled man's legs, allowing him to walk. Together, they rejoined their tribe, celebrated for their survival through cooperation.

This story reminds us of the strength found in unity and overcoming challenges together — a timeless Hopi lesson brought to life through these honored kachinas.
