Richard Zane Smith (1955 - ) is a distinguished artist who, despite being able to document his Wyandotte heritage, does not market himself explicitly as an American Indian. His work is deeply inspired by the ancient, corrugated wares of Southwest cultures. Utilizing thin coils as the foundation for his vessels, Smith innovatively departs from tradition by incorporating polychrome designs on the surface. From a distance, his pieces resemble intricate basketry rather than pottery. Notably, his vessel walls are exceptionally thin, a challenging feat that showcases his remarkable skill and craftsmanship.
