Helen Cordero's Storytellers and Figurines
February 21, 2023 until March 24, 2023
Cochiti Pueblo potters have been creating figurative works for centuries, using an ever-evolving variety of styles and subjects.
In 1964, Cochiti Pueblo artist Helen Cordero began creating Storytellers, which would eventually become the most widely collected style of pueblo pottery figurine. These seated Native figures with open mouths and children clinging to their bodies paid tribute to her pueblo's rich history of oral tradition. Countless artists from Cochiti and elsewhere joined in and carried on the tradition, resulting in a motif that remains incredibly popular among Native artists and collectors.
