From the Preface
The scope of this book on Navajo folk art is wide-ranging. It includes self-taught artists who create paintings, drawings, sculptures, pottery, assemblages, and pictorial rugs. We believe that the Navajo folk artists included in this volume are among the most innovative folk artists of the twentieth century.
Because of the vastness of the Navajo Nation, we have divided it, solely for convenience, into three regions: eastern, central, and western. General information concerning the area is provided in the introduction to the region. Where appropriate, these introductions also contain information about particular types of folk art of that region (pottery and pictorial rugs, for example) and traders who have been influential in encouraging the artists. The artists have been placed in the region in which they live or work.
