FOREWORD
In recent years, the interest and respect accorded the arts of the American Indian have increased steadily. Appreciation of the extraordinary craftsmanship and powerful design of American Indian weavings in particular has resulted in serious scholarship and many exhibitions on this subject. Because of this quickened pace of exposure, the Zimmerli Art Museum (Rutgers, University) takes great pleasure in presenting to the public a selection of nineteenth-century Navajo weavings from one of the finest collections of its kind.
Through this publication, produced on the occasion of the exhibition, the museum showing is given a more permanent form, making the images of these fine works available to an even wider audience. Indeed, the documentation in the catalog of these weavings is of particular importance, for although the blankets, rugs, and other items shown here are of considerable aesthetic and historic significance, they have been, for the most part, rarely or never before publicly exhibited or published.
