Elizabeth Naranjo, Santa Clara Pueblo Potter

Southwest Indian Pottery vessels of this shape have been designated engagement baskets. They are a 20th-century development, having first appeared in the 1960s. The twisted handle is a symbolic representation of the bond that ties the couple together.  It is not known who made the first one.

I understand that Elizabeth Naranjo has retired.  She is 86 years now and has had a wonderful career so she deserves a nice rest.  She has produced many beautiful pottery vessels over the years.  Her work has been well above the average for blackware.  Every pottery piece she has made has been exceptional.

Elizabeth Naranjo (1929- ) signatureElizabeth is the daughter of Pablita Chavarria, who was a potter, and her sisters are Clara Shije, Reycita Naranjo, Florence Browning, and Mary Singer, all of whom are recognized as exceptional potters.  This is a very talented family.
