RARE Jemez Pueblo Historic Black-on-white Canteen [SOLD]

This Jemez Black-on-white jar has two handles near the rim of the jar.  The decoration extends down to the midpoint of the vessel and up to the beginning of the neck.  It is likely that the jar dates to late 17^th century.  It is possible that it was used as a field canteen.

Pottery from Jemez Pueblo is among the rarest of all the pueblos.  Before the Re-conquest, pottery was made for use by members of the pueblo but after that event, pottery production declined rapidly.  Pre-historic pottery from before 1600 has been excavated and is known as Jemez Black-on-white.  Pottery of that period has simple black designs over white slip as in this jar/canteen.

Condition: excellent structural condition.  There is brown residue (dirt?) on portions of the surface.

Provenance: given to a Jemez Pueblo artist by an older Jemez Pueblo resident a number of years ago.  It was from the artist that we recently acquired the jar.
