Dolores Lewis Garcia is a daughter of Lucy M. Lewis, and was taught the craft of pottery making by her mother. She says her ancient ancestors, the Anasazi, inspire her designs. The design on this jar is one generally associated with Zuni Pueblo. The figures are known as “heart-line deer.” It has been stated that Lucy Lewis approached Zuni elders and asked permission to use the Zuni design on her pottery and her request was granted. She and her daughters have used the Zuni design for over a half century.
Dolores is from Acoma Pueblo and has received many awards at Santa Fe Indian Market and has been represented in many exhibitions, including in the 1993 Taipei International Exhibition of Traditional Arts & Crafts, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taiwan. She has been published in many books.
This jar was constructed in the traditional hand coil method and decorated with vegetal and mineral paints. It is signed Dolores Lewis Pueblo of Acoma. The jar was constructed from the white clay of Acoma and a white clay slip was applied to the exterior and polished to a high sheen. The deer are presented in a beautiful dark brown vegetal paint with deep red arrowheads at the end of the heartline.
