Virginia Garcia descends from a lineage of Santa Clara and Ohkay Owingeh potters. She is the youngest sister of Greg and Tina Garcia, the niece of Angela Baca, and the granddaughter of Severa Tafoya. Like others in her family, she is an accomplished artist, as this elegant redware jar suggests.
This Southwest Indian Pottery jar is globular in shape and indented ribs would classify it as a melon jar, a tribute to her Aunt Angela Baca who specialized in producing melon jars. Typical of Garcia family pottery is the incredible stone polish. It is signed on the base Virginia Garcia SC/SJ, for Santa Clara / San Juan, acknowledging both pueblo’s longstanding pottery traditions. It is dated ’94.
