This jar was made in 1999 and was awarded a Third Place award at the Santa Fe Indian Market that year. For years, I thought that Wanda Aragon only made miniature pottery as that is all she ever brought to me at the old gallery location in Albuquerque, but this large olla is testimony that she did and probably still does make larger jars.  This jar was made in 1999 and was awarded a Third Place award at the Santa Fe Indian Market that year.  Wanda has received awards since 1975 and every year from 1987 to 1998 and constantly since then.  She is an accomplished potter.

Wanda Aragon (1948 – present) Dzinats’ituwits’a modeled the design of the jar on an 1884 Acoma Pueblo jar according to information she applied to the base of the jar.  She signed the base with the following: Dzinats’ituwits’a W. Aragon Ak’u, N.M. ca.1884-1999 and with a three-cloud hallmark.

The design of this wonderful pottery vessel contains a double rainbow undulating around the circumference.  Between the rainbows are a series of connected black rectangles, each split in its center with a white line.  Below the lower rainbow are parrots and birds of two styles.  Above the upper rainbow is a series of three-pronged flora.  The rim is black and the inner rim is painted orange, as is the underbody.

Signature of Wanda Aragon (1948 – present) Dzinats’ituwits’a

This Southwest Indian Pottery jar is a magnificent creation.  The colors are strong and well applied and the designs were executed with precision, a very difficult feat using a paint brush fashioned from a yucca leaf.
