Once Known Native American Potter

This is truly a wonderful small jar that is, without doubt, from the hands of an experienced potter. The vessel shape is reminiscent of Sikyatki seed jars that were the precedent for many of the 19th century Hopi wares. The thin vessel wall, the slightly raised and defined lip and execution of the design all are indicators of superior workmanship.

The design is repetitious around the shoulder of the jar.  It consists of eight small triangles, outlined in black and filled in with white, attached to a thin framing line.  Below those are a series of traditional Hopi feather designs each connected together by a continuous black line in each of which the same design is repeated. A wide black framing line below the rim and three framing lines below the design contain the painted elements.

The whole jar was slipped from top to bottom and the decorations applied with mineral paint. The bottom is rounded but the jar sits on a level plane.

Condition:  It is an excellent historic piece that is in very good condition. There are two surface scratches and a beautiful fire cloud on the underside.
