Manfred Knaak came to the United States in 1963 from Germany.  His parents had settled in Immenstaad/Bodensee, after fleeing Danzig at the end of World War II.  He began to travel in Baja California and the Southwest, studying native cultures and realizing his childhood dream of learning about American Indians and the West.

He taught himself English, and earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Anthropology from the San Diego State University.  In 1972 Manfred was hired by Anza-Borrego Desert State Park to document Native American sites.  In 1975 he became a State Park Ranger and has spent most of his career at Anza-Borrego studying the park’s Native American cultures….
