Brendan C. Kayquoptewa is from the village of Hotevilla on Third Mesa on the Hopi Reservation. He and his brothers and their father are all carvers of Katsina dolls. Brendan started his art career with drawing and painting, but followed his family members and became a carver of dolls. He attended Hopi High School and the University of Arizona.
He has had numerous exhibitions of his art and has won many awards at Santa Fe Indian Market, Heard Museum Show, and the Museum of Northern Arizona Hopi Show and has been published in many southwest art-related magazines.
He not only is an extraordinary carver of katsina dolls but his attention to details of movement and realism are exceptional. The effort he devotes to carving is enhanced by the precision he applies to painting. His carvings are well above average.
