This painting by Johnny Secatero was painted before 1976. It is about Koshare Clowns, Mudheads and an Owl Katsina playing around chasing each other. One Mudhead holds a tree branch he is brandishing around to keep the others from attacking him.
Johnny Secatero was Diné (Navajo). He often painted scenes of Hopi or Zuni subjects, particularly of Katsina dances. His sense of scale and accuracy of detail were standard fare for him. He is well-respected as a painter and very collectible as an artist. His paintings appear in numerous private and public collections. His awards are too numerous to mention here.
The painting is matted but not framed. It is signed in lower right but not dated, however it is known to have been painted before 1976.
Condition: original condition
Provenance: from the estate of the Balcomb family, formerly owners of several art galleries, the last of which closed in 1976.
