From the Slip Cover

“The handheld shield has been an integral part of man’s existence since prehistory.  As a concept and tool, it is among the most ancient to be found in his archaeological record.  In Pueblo Shields Barton Wright, Curator of the Museum of Northern Arizona and an acknowledged expert on the Puebloan cultures of New Mexico and Arizona, traces the development of the individual defensive shield from its first appearance in ancient prehistoric petroglyphs and artifact finds through contemporary ceremonial usage.

“Wright’s Introduction discusses the evolution of the shield both within and without the Puebloan tribes, including the impact of the Plains tribes on Pueblo shield traditions and the effects of the Spanish presence in the Southwest.  He considers both materials and methods of construction and the symbolic motifs which were used to decorate the completed shields.  This book includes photographs, drawings, and detailed individual analyses of rare shields from twelve different Pueblo tribes.  These shields, part of the Fred Harvey Fine Arts Collection, are currently housed in the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona.”
