San Ildefonso Pueblo artist Susana Aguilar was a contemporary of Pueblo pottery matriarchs Maria Martinez and Tonita Roybal of San Ildefonso Pueblo. This artist signed her pottery as Susana.
Susana Martinez Aguilar (circa 1876 - 1949) was an exceptional potter who sometimes painted her own pieces, but later assigned that task to her son, Joe Aguilar. According to Batkin, her "work has been unfairly overlooked by many." American Indian Art Magazine (Autumn 1991), 16(4) p61.
