Artist Monica Silva is celebrated as one of the premier potters of the early 20th century from Santo Domingo Pueblo. Active during the 1920s to 1940s, her work is highly recognizable. For instance, her dough bowls feature a distinctive shape with high shoulders that roll inward about an inch, culminating in a short neck. Her designs are bold and executed in strong black guaco paint.

Born around 1900 and raised at Santa Clara Pueblo, Silva lived there until she married Santiago Lovato of Santo Domingo Pueblo and relocated to his pueblo. She played a pivotal role in teaching and popularizing blackware pottery at Santo Domingo, while also mastering traditional Santo Domingo pottery techniques. Silva remained at Santo Domingo for the rest of her life.
