Santana Melchor (1889-1978) was revered as one of the finest potters from Kewa Pueblo (Santo Domingo) during the early and mid-20th century. Renowned for her exceptional large storage jars, Santana's work was distinguished by her use of traditional designs, which she meticulously preserved and promoted throughout her career. Her dedication to maintaining these artistic traditions played a crucial role in keeping the cultural heritage of Kewa Pueblo pottery alive.
In 1974, Santana Melchor's contributions to Native American art were nationally recognized when she was invited to the White House as part of a delegation of pueblo potters, hosted by First Lady Pat Nixon. This honor underscored her significance in the world of pottery and her role as a cultural ambassador.
Santana Melchor's legacy continues through her children, Crucita Melchor, Ray Melchor, and Dolorita Melchor, who have also contributed to the rich tradition of Kewa Pueblo pottery.
