Emil Pooley (1912-1979)

Emil Pooley, Hopi Pueblo, active ca. 1930s-1979: Katsnia carvings, Emil Pooley was the son of Poliveama; husband of Clara Pooley also a carver; father of George Pooley, Esther Pooley Stant, Raymond Pooley, and four other children. Emil learned to carve from his father Poliveama, he passed it on to his son George Pooley. Emil's father Poliveama, was part of the "split" at Old Oraibi in 1906 and helped with the founding of Hotevilla.

Emil Pooley was a well-known Hopi carver in the Albuquerque area, because he demonstrated Katsina doll carving at the New Mexico State Fair for two decades in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1970 Emil entered Indian Market in Santa Fe. He won both the 1st and 2nd place ribbons. Emil won other ribbons during the next decade.
