BESS YANEZ (1967-present) Hopi, Hotevilla Village, Third Mesa, learned the art of carving miniature katsina dolls from her mother, Mary Yanez. She began carving around 1983 and has been represented by such prestigious Santa Fe galleries as Christof’s and Rainbow Man. She commented on being a woman carver “Typically the men make Katsina dolls. Mom was interested and very artistic. There’s no problem with females doing dolls now. Probably further back it wasn’t looked at as being very traditional.”
