Zuñi Katcinas an Analytical Study
By Ruth Bunzel
Forty-Seventh Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology
To the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution 1929-1930
Reprint edition by The Rio Grande Press, Inc., Glorieta, 1973
Hardback, first edition Rio Grande Press, approximately 275 pages, numerous illustrations
In the first edition of the 47th Annual Report, for the years 1929-1930, but not published until 1932, the handsome color art collected by Leslie A. White, and the exquisite color sketches of the Zuni Katcinas, were printed in black and white instead of full color. Since 1932 was the very height of The Great Depression, one must suppose that the cost of color printing was too much for the Bureau’s budget, so that unsatisfactory (but acceptable) black and white publication was better than none at all.
In this Rio Grande Press reprint edition, the publisher contacted the Smithsonian to see if it was possible that the original color plates were available. The Smithsonian did have the color plates and permitted The Rio Grande Press to print the new edition with color plates. This edition is, therefore, better than the original 1932 printing.
