When Texas author J. Frank Dobie heard about the new museum his friend Tom Gilcrease planned to pen in Tulsa, he wrote to say “Civilized people generations hence will rise up and call you blessed for what you are doing.” Thomas Gilcrease’s passion for art and history, his Native American ancestry, and his oil revenues coincided in a rare alignment, and the result was one of America’s great collections. Generations would indeed be the better for it. More than a half century has passed, but the pleasures and insights the collections offer are undiminished.
